Gender Roles Vary Significantly Across Cultures and Countries
Gender roles are based off the concept of gender, which refers to socially defined and collectively accepted differences between men and women. Gender socialization is the process in which males and females learn about these differences in behaviors and thoughts. Individualistic cultures prioritize personal goals and defines one's identity in terms of personal achievements while collectivistic cultures value the goals of the group and defines one's identity based off attributions of the group. For example, in a Western, individualistic society, women are expected to be caregivers, soft, and submissive while men are expected to be breadwinners, strong, and dominant. Gender socialization is thought to be a binary process, with individuals distinguishing something as either masculine (male) or feminine (female). It is difficult to imagine what a day in a different country and culture would be like but here you will be able to learn and explore the varying gender role issues of three different parts of the world; Latin America, Asia, and Africa.
